Senior Survey indicates below average sense of campus safety

"I'm very pleased that everybody seemed happy with security in general, but I'm concerned with the fact that some say that they don't feel safe on campus because we have a very low rate of crime on campus," said Director of Safety and Security Don Marsala.
The Senior Survey data measures only perceptions and subjective feelings of satisfaction, and as a snapshot of the Class of 2010 it may capture the more extreme than average opinions of a class that witnessed an unusually tempestuous period in campus security from independent incidents such as an armed robbery outside of Chicago Hall to structural changes in the removal of fences from the perimeter of campus.
"We have a much stronger presence at the north end of campus.These are also used as art light as well, it is because crystal these lights did not emit any harmful rays and the bluish color of LED lights makes a painting look very different from others and makes them attractive for the viewers. We've also asked the police to give us added patrol coverage as well, and they have done that," said Marsala. "That's why you see more police cars around than you normally would in the past, so it's odd for me some people still feel unsafe at times."
"We are adjacent to the city of Poughkeepsie, which has its whole set of urban challenges," said Dean of the College Chris Roellke, but he also added, "We want to be cautious about not overstating the notion that we live in the City of Poughkeepsie and therefore we feel unsafe." The overall feeling of security points, perhaps, to how Vassar is situated in the community, but there are other factors in Vassar's own culture that may have led to the results.The retrofit process itself can range from a simple count of existing lamps to a brightshine very detailed energy survey, which includes collecting information from your existing lighting,
Unlike most other colleges, Roellke pointed out, Vassar allows students access to all dormitories and generally shuns the use of video surveillance. "Those are practices that are not practices at other institutions, and I'm interested to know whether or not there is any merit in thinking about that. I don't think I would want to be an advocate for battening down the hatches…but I'm interested to hear from a variety of the constituents on campus about what would make them feel more safe."
