The rise of the digital spies

The rise of the digital spies

This shows such tools are now being used in the political arena, whereas in the past they have typically been mass-market devices which individuals used to detect affairs, make home pornography and to bribe high-profile people.

There is also increasing availability of spying devices that can track vehicles and tap conversations and messages fluorescent lights sent over mobile phones without alerting the users.

Furthermore, many spy cams and digital recorders are now disguised as innocent, everyday objects, such as cigarette boxes or fountain pens. These can be placed in key locations without arousing suspicion in the targets. There are even models built into sunglasses, allowing a miniature DVR camera to inconspicuously record whatever the wearer sees.

"Hidden cameras have evolved in shape and design and can now take various forms that are hard to detect, from pens, watches and car keys to buttons in clothing," said Prinya Hom-anek of the Thailand Information Security Association (TISA) committee.

Such devices used to be employed to capture still images but have evolved over the past four to five years to support digital video and typically come at a price ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 baht. Most are imported from Taiwan.

However, there is also anti-surveillance technology available which can be used to fight back against invasions of women handbags privacy. Such devices can detect reflections from camera lenses and thus identify any hidden units.

However, surveillance technology goes beyond cameras. There are also car-tracking devices no bigger than matchboxes which can be hidden inside a vehicle and relay the target's location, while personal jammers can shut down mobile phone signals in specific areas, whether short-range (10 to 15 metres) or long-range (100-200 metres).

Prinya added that there are also surveillance-type Trojans which hackers can attach to smart phone applications that are either pre-installed or which users are encouraged to download. These allow hackers to eavesdrop on conversations and any SMS or MMS data sent to and from the handset.

Thus users should be aware of the importance of setting passwords to protect against unauthorised installations. This is especially relevant to famous people, who should also be careful to only use trusted individuals when repairing or updating handsets.

"Some important people may not realise that when they get receive expensive smart phones as gifts, they may contain pre-installed spying software," said Prinya.

Digital spying is primarily employed Led lamp to steal business and trade secrets, although personal and political reasons are often motivations, too. The use of such technology can threaten national security.

Therefore, people need to be aware of the threat and be prepared to assess or monitor and detect any suspicious devices or behaviour.

"We need the right people and right equipment to counter this threat," said Prinya.

The greatest danger is not the technology itself, but rather a lack of awareness among people, especially those with a high public profile, who may have accepted compromised smart phones as gifts without realising they contain surveillance Trojans.

Heidelberg football coach sacked after controversial call

Heidelberg football coach sacked after controversial call

Just days after leading his team to the DODDS-Europe Division I football crown, Heidelberg’s football coach announced Tuesday that school leadership has decided to remove him from the position he’s occupied for 15 years.

“I was notified Monday by my principal that HHS will be moving in a new direction and I will not be coaching Led lamp anymore,” Brad Shahan wrote in an e-mail to members of the sports community in Europe.

Reached at home Tuesday, Shahan said he also will no longer be serving as the school’s varsity basketball coach, a position he held since 1990. Shahan declined to comment further on the end of his coaching career, but did say he will remain on board as a teacher.

Heidelberg Principal KJ Brewer did not respond to a phone call or e-mail seeking comment. Athletic Director Karen Seadore would not comment beyond saying it was a “school leadership decision.”

The coaching shake-up comes after weeks of controversy over Shahan’s decision not to field his football team during  women handbags the closing seconds of an Oct. 9 contest against Wiesbaden. The failure to put his team on the field resulted in an imposed forfeiture.

However, the referee’s ruling sparked an uproar of protest among Heidelberg parents, who led the push to get the team’s 54-19 victory reinstated. Last week, Nancy Bresell, director of Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe, overturned the forfeiture. High school sports rules mandate that forfeitures be imposed before the end of a game. Since the referee’s decision was more than a week later, it was in violation of the rule book, Bresell stated in her memorandum.

Though Heidelberg’s victory was reinstated, Shahan was not vindicated of the charge of unsportsmanlike conduct that prompted the original complaint.

“The basis of the protest, that the Heidelberg coach did not direct the players to return to the field after being so directed by the referee and that this lack of action by the coach constituted unsportsmanlike behavior, was substantiated,” Bresell wrote.

On Saturday, Shahan led his Lions to a Hemroids dramatic double-overtime win in a rematch against Wiesbaden. It was the fifth time Shahan led Heidelberg to a football championship. He was equally successful as a basketball coach, leading Heidelberg to numerous championships, including five consecutive Division I crowns from 2000 and 2004.

Guardian Angels land in Newburgh

Guardian Angels land in Newburgh

Entrenched in a culture of crime, violence and gangs, the city welcomed a band of Guardian Angels on Sunday.

In a crowded Newburgh Recreation Center, the Alliance of the Guardian Angels presented the first graduating class of its Newburgh chapter.

Eight people, including the chapter's captain, Miguel Rivera, donned the organization's trademark red Led lamp berets and jackets and proudly accepted their roles as peacemakers — even as the city reeled from Friday's double homicide.

"It's an urban center we live in," said Newburgh Mayor Nick Valentine, "and we have to make sure we don't give up hope."

The Guardian Angels is a group of volunteers who patrol the streets, unarmed, to keep residents safe and empower others to change a culture steeped in crime and violence.

It has 135 chapters in 32 cities and 60 countries.

In Newburgh, people hope that the mere presence of the Guardian Angels — who city Councilwoman Christine Bello called "the very best of Newburgh" — can prove to even the most disillusioned that all is not lost in the city.

But the Guardian Angels weren't always so welcome in Newburgh.

It took many years to convince some that Guardian Angels aren't vigilantes or thugs and that putting bars on the windows and double-locking doors isn't the way to turn back the tide on crime and violence.

"This was a real long time coming," Bello said, "but it surely was worth the wait."

It took time, persistence and a women handbags lot of faith, but these eight Newburgh folks empowered themselves to take responsibility for their city.

The Angels' goal is to serve as eyes and ears for police, though it has been reported that they also sometimes detain people until police arrive.

"We trust people. We know that it is people that have the ability to change the circumstances in their lives," said Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa at the ceremony Sunday.

And that's why these eight people stepped up in Newburgh to take the seven weeks of training needed.

For graduate Julius Harris, 23, it was the thought of his children that prompted him to join. His Guardian Angels street name: "Sonic."

It was the same for 24-year-old Darcel "Snuggles" Hamilton, whose children need a safe place to grow up.

That safe environment seems further away than ever before, with the deaths of former Town of Lloyd police sergeant led lighting Francis Piscopo and his nephew Gerald Piscopo in a Washington Heights house Friday. Their deaths make 2010 Newburgh's deadliest year in more than a decade.

But Guardian Angels graduate Connie "Daisy" Gamel isn't losing hope. "My job is more important to me than ever before," she said.

Timex plans to bring more luxury brands to India

Timex plans to bring more luxury brands to India

After a complete recast of its retail structure and brand positioning, watch maker Timex Group India has been seeing steady growth in profitability. The once ailing company is now expecting its revenues to grow at 25% year-on-year, ahead of the industry rate of 12%. VD Wadhwa, managing director, Timex Group, talks to FE's Shreya Roy about how the restructuring  Granite countertops has worked, future expansion and the company's plans to bring in watches from iconic luxury brands like Versace and Valentino to India.

In the past few years, Timex India has been going through a major overhaul in its retail structure and brand positioning. How has this worked for you?

When we started in the country, we were largely in the below Rs 1,000 category. Here, you can do volumes there but there is no margin. This is where we have done a complete repositioning. With the Timex brand, we have moved largely into the Rs 1,000 to Rs 11,000 market. This has not caused much revenue growth, but we have become highly profitable. We also restructured our retailing strategy, and from 6,000 to 7,000 points of sales we cut back to 3,200. We pulled out of non-profitable geographies; we pulled out products that were not giving us the desired margins. Now, each of our products give us a significant amount of gross margin.

Is this process of restructuring complete? What is the company looking at currently?

It is an on-going process. One of the things we have been focusing on is to keep improving average retail price by at least 10-15%. We continuously revamp our product portfolio. Each time we add something new, we do a lot of product advancement and there is then an opportunity  women handbags to charge a better price. Consumers are willing to pay the price if you can give him a better product.

What is your current market share? What are you targeting?

The segment in which we majorly operate the Rs 1000 to Rs 11,000 category, is roughly 60% of the Rs 4000 crore watch market. Here, we have close to 21% share. More than market share, we are chasing our own growth. In the last few years, the market has grown at close to 12% and our growth has also been in the low double digits or high single digits. With the expansion of our portfolio and retail presence, we are aiming at a 25% year-on-year growth in revenue over the next three to five years. For the first half of this year, we have achieved 27% growth.

What is your plan for retail expansion?

Our exclusive retail format is called The Time Factory, where we sell portfolio brands from Timex including our international labels like Marc Ecko and Nautica. In the last six months, we have added 12 of these stores, and our current count is 74. In the next 36 months, we will be Led lamp looking at doubling this number. Around 35 to 40 of these would come up in the next 12 months. Currently we are located in 33 cities, and we plan to add another 16-17 cities in the next three years period. Majority of these will be tier II and tier III markets.

Other than retail expansion, what are you doing to achieve your growth target of 25%?

We are doubling our media and marketing efforts. We have decided to put a lot of money back into marketing, to make growth sustainable. Normally, we spend 11% of our turnover in the budget. Next year, we are planning to double this. Jan to December 2011, we will be looking at spending $4 to $5 million on marketing.

You have recently launched Salvatore Ferragamo, one of the luxury brands that Timex has in its portfolio internationally. How has this move helped you and what are your plans for the luxury segment?

The initial response over the past six months since the launch has been very encouraging. The luxury watch segment, that is watches above Rs 50,000 is the fastest growing category in India today . It is estimated at about Rs 600 crore, growing at 25%. This trend is going to continue. We are now in the process of rolling out a Versace collection in the next two to three months. We will look at bringing in our other luxury brands like Valentino as well. Currently this segment contributes to less than 1% but we expect it to make up 5-6% of revenues in another two years.

Morris says Bucs will learn from loss to Falcons

Morris says Bucs will learn from loss to Falcons

Raheem Morris refuses to second-guess himself or his young Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A day after falling a yard short of taking over sole possession of first place in the NFC South, the NFL's youngest led lighting coach focused on the encouraging aspects of the team's performance during a 27-21 loss to Atlanta instead of a goal-line play the Falcons stuffed in the closing minutes.

Morris acknowledged Monday that rookie LeGarrette Blount made a mistake by bouncing outside, rather than running up the middle, on fourth-and-1 from the Atlanta 2 with the game on the line. Television replays showed a gaping hole where the play was designed to go.

Rather than picking up the first  kidney stone down, and maybe even scoring, the 247-pound Blount was tackled by Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud for no gain.

"He didn't run the wrong play, he just made the wrong cut," said Morris, who stressed the defeat could not be pinned on Blount's decision.

"We're all great running backs the next day. He bounces out there and runs over DeCoud and we're all having a pool party. But he stuck his foot in the ground, he made a cut, his vision at that time  ed hardy sunglasses   was different than ours would be today looking at tape. He should've gone downhill, but he didn't. That happens. That's part of having a young football team, making a mistake, but we'll come back and get better from it."

Blount said Sunday that the hole that was "supposed to be there" wasn't, so he cut the play off right tackle.
DeCoud made a nice stop, however the rookie out of Oregon felt he gained enough for a first down.

Out of timeouts, the Bucs were unable replicas de relojes to challenge the spot.

Tampa Bay started six rookies, and played 12 overall, against the Falcons. Morris refused to cite youth and inexperience as a factor on the crucial play.

"That can happen with a vet. That can happen with anybody. That's just playing the game, and you can't second-guess players that way. That's just not a good road to go down," Morris said.

The loss dropped the Bucs (5-3) into third place in the division and, at least for now, forced Morris to back off his claim that Tampa Bay is the best team in the NFC.

The 34-year-old coach reiterated that he and his players didn't take solace in playing the Falcons (6-3) tough on the road. In their other two losses, the Bucs were outscored at home by a combined  women handbags 69-19 by Pittsburgh and New Orleans.

"There's no consolation. Every week, there are lessons to be learned from every game ... something you can use for your football team in the future," Morris said.

Norschleife watches measure the time that counts

Time. It's just about the ultimate bragging right when it comes to high-performance automobiles, and it usually comes down to one factor: how fast can said car get around the Nürburgring Nordschleife? Canada watches with fingers crossed

Canada watches with fingers crossed

During his much-hyped visit here, President Barack Obama has danced with school children, won points by praising led lights Mahatma Gandhi and, in what will surely be seen here as the highlight of his trip, said the U.S. supports a permanent seat for India on the United Nations Security Council.

India has been mesmerized, and there are few corners of this nation of 1.2 billion that haven’t been immersed in news coverage of Obama’s trip — including the leafy grounds of the Canadian mission in New Delhi.

India’s economy is surging 9 per cent a year and Obama hopes to harness its new wealth in ways that will help to Hemroids spur America’s flagging industries. Canadian diplomats here are firmly rooting for the U.S. president. That’s because if the U.S. increases its trade with India, diplomats and business leaders say, Canada stands to reap some of the benefits.

“The Canadian and U.S. economies are so dependent on one another, although we’re like the junior partner in   replica uhren that relationship,” said Olivier Courteaux, an expert on Canada-U.S. relations and an assistant history professor at Ryerson University.

“Look at Canada’s exports. Eighty-five per cent of them go to the U.S. If Obama is successful in India, it’s going to help Canada as well.”

Obama had hoped to help Boeing finalize a $5 billion deal to sell 10 C-17 transport planes to the Indian government during his visit and while no pact has been announced, U.S. officials say they are confident an agreement will be reached.

Also in the works are plans by energy saving light Boeing to bid for a $10 billion contract with India to replace old Russian-made fighter planes with new jets. That contract could be awarded next year.

Both Boeing deals could ultimately be wins for Canada. The aerospace company says it contributes $1 billion in business to Canada’s economy and it employs 1,600 in Ontario, Quebec, B.C. and Manitoba.

Obama has also promised America’s support for India to join the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group, a deal that has been endorsed by General Electric.

India’s inclusion in that select group could ultimately benefit Canada-based Cameco, the world’s largest uranium producer, and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., the maker of CANDU nuclear reactors. India plans a drastic expansion of its nuclear power plants.

Even Canada’s auto sector could benefit from warmer U.S.-India relations.

Last month, General Motors sold 10,051 vehicles in India, up 36 per cent over October 2009. Ford’s sales were up 161 women handbags per cent. Both companies have large Canadian operations that would benefit from more orders from India, diplomats here said.

As his three-day visit here drew to a close, Indian commentators were calling Obama's trip a success. The president was trying to charm his hosts by salting his speech Monday with Hindi phrases like “Jai Hind,” which translates loosely to “Hail India.”
