Areas throughout downtown Ypsilanti will soon undergo improvements in an effort to make it more aesthetically appealing and safe.

Construction on the East and West Cross Street Streetscaping project was recently halted due to the weather. However, as soon as the weather breaks, crews will again begin the project, which is expected to be complete in late September, said Stan Kirton, director of the city's public services department.

"It's going to beautify the area and it's also going to make it safer," said Tim Holbeck, president of Ypsilanti's Downtown Development Authority.

Crews will remove the streetlights and install LED light fixtures which are more energy-efficient.
